Premiere: Dana T, “Don’t Let Me Live Forever”

Really nice to premiere this single by Iowa City’s Dana T, ahead of his record Harsh Forever, which will be out May 11. This has sort of an Unknown Mortal Orchestra/traditional James Brown-esque pocket playing feel, and it’s real smooth and real good.

An ostensibly humble dude, Dana asked that I convey how many musicians play on this song and on the record–it’s a LOT of people. Nine people, to be exact. You can see all their names on the Dana T bandcamp¬†and credits for this record.

I LOVE to get music that goes outside what passes for “the mainstream” within the subculture of DIY (a substream? a substream of a substream?), and this record definitely flows through an alternate current. I love how a classically trained musician (he mentions he’s a former Iowa all-state first-chair tuba player!) has taken his training and used it to make his own thing in his own way.
